How the calculator counts
The calculator uses our sizing guideline for events and OSHA Table D-1 for work crews. Every adjustment is a whole unit, so the math shows exactly where each unit comes from. It also adds hand wash stations at 1 per 3 toilets and accessible units at 5 percent per cluster.
- Events: 1 unit per 50 guests, rounded up
- Over 4 hours: add 1 unit per 150 guests
- Alcohol served: add 1 unit per 150 guests
- Food served: 1 hand wash station per 3 toilets, rounded up
- Public events: at least 1 wheelchair-accessible unit per cluster of up to 20 units (ADA 213.2, 5%)
- Work crews: OSHA minimum, plus our 1-per-10-workers recommendation for weekly service
How many porta potties do you need for an event?
You need 1 standard porta potty per 50 guests for an event up to 4 hours. Add 1 unit per 150 guests when the event runs longer than 4 hours, and 1 more per 150 guests when alcohol is served. Round every step up to a whole unit.
| Guests | Up to 4 hours | 4–8 hours | 4–8 hours with alcohol | Hand wash stations (food, up to 4 h) |

This guideline is our company method, based on the 60-gallon tank of a standard unit and typical use per guest. It is a recommendation, not a legal requirement. Your venue, park or permit office may set its own minimum.
How many porta potties does a construction site need?
A construction site needs at least 1 toilet for 20 or fewer workers, and 1 toilet seat plus 1 urinal per 40 workers above 20, under OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 Table D-1. For crews above 200, the ratio is 1 seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers.
Legal minimum vs our recommendation: a 30-person crew meets OSHA with 1 standard unit, because each unit has a seat and a urinal. We recommend 3 units with weekly service, because 30 people working 40 hours fill a 60-gallon tank in about 3 days. Two service visits a week is the alternative. Check your contract and safety plan.
How many porta potties does a farm crew need?
Farm crews of 11 or more hand laborers need 1 toilet and 1 hand washing facility per 20 workers, within a quarter-mile walk, under OSHA 29 CFR 1928.110. Crews working 3 hours or less in the field, including travel, are exempt.
